Summer Solstice
Oak Leaf symbol of Summer Solstice
June 21st

The Summer Solstice, an ancient fire festival is perhaps the one most publicised today, with high exposure in the media of celebrations at Stonehenge and other sacred sites throughout the country. It also requires some commitment to be up to greet the rising sun!

If you haven't yet risen in the strange half-light of predawn and sat patiently waiting for the first glimpse of the sun, I recommend it.  It's great to be part of a large gathering, but personally I find it most spiritual alone, tuning myself into the rhythm of the earth, imagining the planet at its utmost tilt towards the sun. I always feel very in harmony with our ancestors who did exactly the same thing for so many centuries.

The same is true of the Solstice sunset,  many hours later. And there's a certain sadness in knowing that the days will now be getting shorter again.

The symbol of the Summer Solstice at Stonewylde is the oak leaf, as folk lore tells us that this was the festival of the Oak King.  There was perennial conflict between the Oak King and the Holly King, one superceding the other at each solstice.

At Stonewylde this is the time of the Midsummer holiday, when all the hard-working Villagers get a chance to relax and enjoy themselves.  There are many organised sports and games, and picnics all around the estate of Stonewylde.  Visiting Hallfolk swell the numbers and of course expect to be waited on hand and foot.

Hay has been harvested and the other cereal crops are now growing well in the fields, ripening towards the beginning of August when the folk of Stonewylde will be celebrating Lammas.

Bright blessings
to all
Stonewylde readers
at the Summer Solstice!
Phew - managed to get this newsletter out in time for the Summer Solstice! Bright blessings to everyone, and I hope you have a wonderful time at this important turning point of the year.  The sun is at its zenith, and although for us in the modern world that may not seem especially relevant, just imagine what it must have felt like for our ancestors who watched these things so carefully. The longest day of the year for us in the Northern Hemisphere, and the time when the sun rises and sets at its furthest points on the horizon.

When I lived in Dorset I always stood in a special place on a hilltop and knew exactly the spot where the sun would appear and disappear on June 21st.  It amazed me to discover that the sunrise spot was exactly the same as the place where the Winter Solstice full moon rose.

Solstice bonfire and full moon

Mr B and I have now settled into our new home and it's lovely here. We've been innundated with visits from family and friends, and especially all our children who love the house and garden. I've been busy planting vegetables and decorating, and had a bit of a set-back trying to catch up with all the e-mails after our lack of broadband during the first couple of weeks here.  We were burgled during the night as we slept (NB - if you have a uPVC front door with handle, lock it from the inside with a key.  I wish we'd known that.) and our laptops were stolen. Luckily one of my cats, Malik, woke me up going crazy and the thieves only got the laptops. Everything's backed up but it's messed up my e-mails and I don't know who've I've replied to.  If you've written to me since May and haven't heard back, please write again.  I'm not being rude - just can't see who I've replied to.  Sorry!

The books are selling strongly throughout the UK and are stocked in so many independent book shops now.  Waterstones are slightly lagging behind, although many of them do sell Stonewylde. Amazon and other Internet sites are still going mad, selling so many copies.  I was recently featured in another national magazine, but am still looking for some TV coverage. That would make all the difference. Please help if you have any media contacts.  And if not, just keep telling all your friends and family to read the books.  It really does work.  We all like to read something that's been personally recommended.

Oak tree at Monkton Wyld Court

I shall be celebrating the Summer Solstice with Mr B enjoying a day out in the countryside. This time last year I was in Italy at the Hill that Breathes (where I took the sunrise photo
above).  Next year we may be doing something very special for the Solstice - don't want to give away too much yet, but keep reading the newsletters!

Kit Berry and Diane of Green Man Books wearing their Stonewylde T-Shirts

Mr B and I will be at Womad in July wearing our Stonewylde T-shirts, so if you're there, look out for us!  I believe many fans have been wearing theirs to festivals and gatherings, so keep an eye open for the distinctive Green Man on the front, and reclining Earth Goddess on the back.  The T-shirts have been selling like hot (ceremony) cakes so if you haven't bought one yet, do visit the Stonewylde Store before we start to run out.

It's been a very busy time what with the BBC Radio interview, Wessex Gathering and my trip to Monkton Wyld.  Sadly Glennie Kindred was ill and couldn't take the course, although Nik and Jo from Woodwize did a brilliant job running the weekend about Sacred Trees. It turned out the willow and birch were special to me that weekend (symbolising creativity and new beginnings respectively - bodes well for Book 4 then!).  Do check out Monkton Wyld in Dorset (click here) as they have some great courses and it's a wonderful, magical place.  And fantastic food too!

I wish you all happiness, peace and magic at the Summer Solstice.  Even if you're not into celebrating the Pagan festivals, take time to tune into the special energy of this important day in our calendar.

The Stonewylde Village Store on the website has been selling a great deal of the new T-shirts, featuring an image of the Green Man on the front, and the Earth Goddess logo on the back. The T shirts are available in green or white, and are a must for all Stonewylde fans. Judi Spiers and Damh the Bard love theirs!  And our Dutch fans are wearing them in the Netherlands too! Take yours on holiday and spread the word about Stonewylde.

Kit on BBC Radio  with Judi Spiers - Devon now Stonewylded!

Kit Berry and Judi Spiers at BBC Radion Devon

I spent a wonderful morning in the BBC studios in Exeter, talking to Judi Spiers on her popular morning radio programme.  I remember her from Gus Honeybun days (anyone else remember that?) and she is a lovely, warm and very professional lady.  I didn't have time to get nervous but we launched straight into the half hour interview live on air, and it was great.  Mostly because Judi loves the books so much that her enthusiasm kept bubbling out and encouraging me to talk without a chance for stagefright.  Magus of Stonewylde was then serialised the following week (well, the first chapter anyway) and there's been a brilliant response from readers in Devon.  Click here to listen.

Kit meets popular singer Damh the Bard at Wessex Gathering

Kit Berry with Damh the Bard at the Wessex Gathering

This month I also spoke at the Wessex Gathering in Dorset to a large group, and then signed books afterwards with Jerry and Diane of Green Man Books.  It was, as ever, wonderful to meet up with fans and hear their excitement about Stonewylde.  I also met Damh the Bard, a huge bear of a singer, who raved about Stonewylde and gave me all his lovely CDs! Thanks to Phil and Nina for inviting me and for such a lovely day in the Dorset countryside near Swanage.

Meet Kit at
Quest 2008 in Newton Abbot

I've been invited to come to Quest on Saturday July 5th at Newton Abbot in Devon.  I shall be at Mercury Rising's bookstall with Debbie and Steve, and look forward to seeing many of you there.  I hope to be there from 11am till 3pm with maybe a little time off for browsing around the stalls and visiting some workshops too. Look out for me in my Stonewylde T-shirt - and a big hug for anyone I spot wearing theirs!
Amazing little
star-gazy tortoise!

Sylvie the Indian Star Tortoise

I felt very honoured recently when Robin Dibben aged 16 from Dorset e-mailed me to tell me about his little Indian Star tortoise.  He's been saving for a long time to buy her, and has named her Sylvie because of the moongazy stars on her shell.  Thank you Robin - and glad you love Stonewylde so much!  And those are fingers in the background of the photo - that's how tiny she is!
