Kit Berry loves hares - and it was an encounter with a hare in some woods that first inspired her to follow a pagan path, and to write the Stonewylde Series. So it seems fitting that the charity she has chosen to support at Stonewylde is one which aims to protect hares, both through educating the public and also lobbying the Government for protection for these beautiful creatures.
Hares are not protected by a closed season and can be shot at any time of year. Although a dwindling species and in desperate need of protection and conservation, an estimated 300,000 hares are shot in the UK each year - 40% of the entire UK hare population - with about 30,000 leverets orphaned who then die of starvation. How can this be allowed to happen to a species which is drastically declining due to modern farming methods?
